Local Arbor Day Events in Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Foley
The 34th Arbor Day Celebration will take place on Saturday, February 27, from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the Gulf Shores Elementary School. This year the event will operate as a drive-through to provide a safe environment for all participants.
Residents of each household that reside within the Gulf Shores corporate limits may select four different trees from six different varieties: Persimmon, Pecan, Witch Hazel, Turkey Oak, Bald Cypress and Red Bay.
To receive the trees, residents must show proof of residency. The trees are potted in one-gallon containers and are ready for planting. A brochure giving specifics on each tree is available to residents. Members of the Gulf Shores Landscape Division will be onsite to answer questions about the trees.
The City of Orange Beach will observe Arbor Day with a tree giveaway on Saturday, Feb. 27 and a special tree giveaway on Saturday, March 13 that will serve as the launch of “Re-Tree OB,” a new grassroots effort aimed at replanting trees lost during Hurricane Sally.
On both Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., trees will be given away in one-, three- and six-gallon pots – for Orange Beach residents only – in front of the Orange Beach Community Development building at 4101 Orange Beach Blvd. The March 13 kickoff event will have volunteers on hand to explain the “Re-Tree OB” tree-planting effort. More information will be shared about “Re-Tree OB” in coming weeks.
Foley’s Revitalization and Beautification Advisory Board invites the community to the city’s 40th Annual Celebration of Arbor Day. The event will be held at the Coastal Alabama Farmers and Fishermens Market, located at 20733 Miflin Road, at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, Feb. 27.
Foley, recognized for 40 years as a Tree City, proudly promotes the planting of trees. Trees reduce erosion, cut heating and cooling costs, produce oxygen, provide habitat for wildlife and add beauty to our environment. Representatives from the Alabama Forestry Commission, Baldwin County Master Gardeners and Certified Arborists will be on hand to answer any questions about trees.
Boy Scout Troop 77 will assist in the distribution of trees. An assortment of trees in one and three gallon containers will be given away, one tree per family please. The Foley High School Air Force Junior ROTC will present the Colors for the occasion. The winning posters from the Arbor Day Poster Contest will be on display.
